Parte 2: Cuando llegó la noche

La tarde comenzaba a desaparecer sobre Knebworth Park, pero la jornada estaba todavía muy lejos de terminar. A esas alturas, el público llevaba ya muchas horas de música y por el escenario habían pasado Tears for Fears, Status Quo, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Robert Plant con la aparición de Jimmy Page, además de Phil Collins y Genesis. Un cartel que, por sí solo, habría bastado para convertir cualquier festival en histórico, pero aquel 30 de junio de 1990 parecía empeñado en demostrar que lo imposible podía reunirse en un mismo escenario. Todavía quedaban Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Elton John, Paul McCartney y Pink Floyd, y la noche iba a traer algunos de los momentos más recordados de aquella gigantesca celebración del rock.

La noche en la que el Teatro Romano se rindió a Edgar Allan Poe

Crónica del Señor X para Fresh and Alive

Hay conciertos que se escuchan. Otros se viven. Y muy pocos consiguen quedarse contigo para siempre. Lo que ocurrió el 28 de junio de 2026 en el Teatro Romano de Mérida pertenece a esa última categoría.

Cuando crucé las puertas del recinto y contemplé las columnas iluminadas por la noche extremeña, tuve la sensación de que aquel escenario había estado esperando medio siglo para recibir Tales of Mystery and Imagination. No podía existir un lugar más apropiado para que la música de Alan Parsons se fundiera con la historia y con el misterio.

La introducción de "May Be a Price to Pay" marcó el inicio de una velada impecable. "Standing on Higher Ground" terminó de encender al público antes de que llegara el momento que todos esperábamos: la interpretación íntegra del álbum que cambió para siempre la forma de entender el rock sinfónico.

Durante más de una hora, el Teatro Romano dejó de ser un monumento para convertirse en el escenario de los relatos de Edgar Allan Poe. "A Dream Within a Dream", "The Raven", "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado", "(The System of) Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether", "The Fall of the House of Usher" y "To One in Paradise" sonaron con una precisión extraordinaria, envueltas por una acústica que parecía hecha a medida para esta obra.

Miraba a mi alrededor y veía miles de rostros completamente absortos. Nadie hablaba. Nadie quería romper la magia. En esos momentos entiendes por qué algunos conciertos dejan de ser simples actuaciones para convertirse en experiencias irrepetibles.

La recta final fue una auténtica celebración de la trayectoria de Alan Parsons. "Damned If I Do", "Prime Time", "Eye in the Sky" y el inevitable cierre con "Games People Play" hicieron que todo el teatro se levantara para despedir a una banda en estado de gracia.

Como Señor X, he tenido la fortuna de asistir a cientos de conciertos durante décadas. He visto actuaciones históricas, festivales inolvidables y reuniones que jamás pensé que llegarían a producirse. Pero confieso que aquella noche en Mérida tuvo algo diferente. No fue solo la música. Fue el lugar, la celebración del cincuenta aniversario de un disco inmortal y esa extraña sensación de estar viviendo un momento que, con el paso del tiempo, acabará formando parte de la historia.

KNEBWORTH ’90: EL DÍA EN QUE LOS GIGANTES DEL ROCK SE REUNIERON EN UN MISMO ESCENARIO

Hay grabaciones que son mucho más que un simple documento sonoro. Son pequeñas máquinas del tiempo. Basta pulsar el play, cerrar los ojos y dejar que el ruido del público nos devuelva a un lugar y a un momento que ya no existen.

Esta vez viajamos hasta el **30 de junio de 1990**, a Knebworth Park. Sobre aquel escenario se reunió un cartel que hoy parece casi imposible: Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Genesis, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Elton John, Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, Status Quo y muchas otras figuras esenciales de varias generaciones.

A través de las grabaciones que sobrevivieron a aquella jornada regresamos a uno de los grandes acontecimientos musicales de su tiempo. Durante **dos entregas** recorreremos su historia, sus protagonistas y algunos de los momentos que convirtieron Knebworth ’90 en una fecha difícil de olvidar.

El concierto comenzó con una introducción que incorporaba grabaciones de material anterior de los Kinks, con el clásico riff de guitarra de "You Really Got Me" como base. La banda ofreció un set de hora y media con canciones nuevas y clásicos, en la que fue una de las giras más memorables musicalmente de su carrera. Tras varias giras con una elaborada puesta en escena de cinco instrumentos de viento y varios coristas, la banda, con un presupuesto ajustado, mantuvo la formación original de cuatro integrantes con Ian Gibbons en los teclados.

El miembro fundador y baterista de larga trayectoria, Mick Avory, se había marchado en ese momento, y Rob Henrit lo reemplazó. Con Jim Rodford al bajo y la voz, los Kinks contaban ahora con la sección rítmica de la banda británica Argent.
