Peter Green es considerado como una de las figuras más importantes del blues británico, cuyo marcado vibrato y su economía de estilo lo posiciona como uno de los guitarristas más creativos y originales que ha dado Inglaterra.​ En 2004 fue incluido en el puesto 58 de la lista de los guitarristas más grandes de todos los tiempos de la revista Rolling Stone.​ Mientras que en junio de 1996 fue votado como el tercer mejor guitarrista de todos los tiempos por la revista Mojo.

Deep Purple Mk II (1992-1993)

Cuando Ian Gillan se reincorpora a la banda, el nuevo álbum se encuentra a medias. Gillan decide re-escribir las letras. El resultado es The Battle Rages On, álbum lanzado en julio de 1993, título que refleja de cierto modo el tenso ambiente interno. No obstante, en esta entrega emerge nuevamente el sonido característico de la banda, con temas sólidos como el homónimo «The Battle Rages On», «Anya», «Talk About Love», «A Twist in the Tale» y «Solitaire».

El álbum es simplemente genial en su esencia Rock, incluso los propios miembros de la banda no dudan en calificarlo como el mejor álbum hecho hasta esa fecha. El grupo consigue mantener su sonido y poner en funcionamiento una vez más esta máquina de hacer música. Pero, a pesar de lo satisfactorio del resultado, los problemas y roces de dos de sus miembros tienen mucho más peso a la hora de evaluar la continuidad de la formación, de forma que la única solución es la salida de uno de los dos: Blackmore o Gillan.

A fines de 1993 los conciertos realizados el 16 de octubre en Stuttgart, Alemania, y el 9 de noviembre en Birmingham, Reino Unido, son grabados íntegramente, y sirven de base para extraer los temas que componen el disco en vivo Come Hell or High Water, editado en noviembre de 1994. El nuevo disco también es editado en video bajo el mismo nombre y destaca por incluir 6 temas más que la versión de audio, aunque sólo utiliza las imágenes del concierto realizado en Birmingham.

En diciembre de 1989 Joe Lynn Turner es incorporado como el nuevo cantante. Turner había triunfado con Rainbow e Yngwie Malmsteen, y además se llevaba muy bien con Blackmore, tras su trabajo en Rainbow desde 1980 a 1984. Con este nuevo vocalista la banda edita en octubre de 1990 el álbum Slaves & Masters. Este disco posee un sonido mucho más melódico y armonioso que sus antecesores, cercano al Arena rock, y lejos del sonido característico de la banda, aunque aún ofreciendo material de calidad.

En este álbum destacan los temas: «The Cut Runs Deep», «King Of Dreams» (principal tema que se utilizó para publicitar el álbum), «Fire In The Basement» y «Love Conquers All». Se editaron 2 videoclips promocionales para apoyar la difusión del álbum, con los temas «King Of Dreams» y «Love Conquers All». Ritchie Blackmore apuesta por la construcción de memorables melodías, y en cierta forma lo logra, en conjunto con el aporte de Turner.

Deep Purple - 1991-04-20 - Philadelphia, PA

A pesar de interpretar clásicos del "Mk III", algunos de ellos vetados por Gillan, - comenzando los conciertos con el memorable «Burn» - e incorporando el clásico del "Mk I": «Hey Joe», los resultados no fueron del agrado del resto del grupo. Blackmore, por contra, consideraba el álbum Slaves & Masters como uno de sus favoritos.

Debido a la presión de muchos fans, que definitivamente no aceptaban esta nueva formación, de opiniones internas y del propio sello discográfico, finalmente despiden a Turner mientras realizaban las grabaciones del siguiente álbum. En abril de 1992 la banda convoca nuevamente a Ian Gillan, pero esta vez sin el visto bueno de Blackmore.
